Continuing Education and CEH Opportunities
![]()
Below are listed various educational opportunities for geology. These programs are not limited to Professional Geologists, they are open for anyone with an interest in learning more about the various facets of geology. For Professional Geologists, these are opportunities to gain Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) and are provided with the following caveats:
- The New Hampshire Joint Board does not pre-approve any activity for CEHs.
- Guidance on the criteria that continuing education activities must meet is located in the Code of Administrative Rules, Part Geo 403. The continuing education requirements can be found at: www.state.nh.us/jtboard/geoce.htm. A Generic Activity Form and Continuing Education Activity Log are located at: www.state.nh.us/jtboard/pgce.htm
- GSNH has not evaluated any of the activities that are sponsored by other organizations. This list is simply provided as a service to Professional Geologists seeking opportunities to gain CEH.
Geological Society of MAINE Summer Field Trip and Meeting, Friday July 25 to Sunday July 27, 2008 to Mt. Desert Island and environs.
NOTE! Looking for the field trip for the Geological Society of New Hampshire?
Some highlights of the GSM field trip will include the scenic view from Cadillac Mountain, a stop to see active processes at Sand Beach and a modern boulder beach with a sea stack, a Pleistocene sea cave, and a truly world-class outcrop of the ‘shatter zone’ contact of the Bar Harbor Formation and igneous units of the Cadillac Mountain pluton. The shatter zone consists of gabbroic and granitic bodies and angular blocks of intensely shattered as well partially melted and deformed fragments of country rock, part of a magma chamber that cooled at a relatively shallow depth in the earth’s crust.
A stop at the Maine Granite Industry Historical Society is planned for the afternoon, with a demonstration of granite cutting and a trip to a nearby historic quarry (the Hall Quarry) on Sommes Sound. Sunday we are arranging for a visit to an active granite quarry in Sullivan, where we will be treated to a demonstration of granite quarrying using foot wedges and a 28 lb hammer. For an overview of the geology meeting trip participants should read Maine Geological Survey Bulletin 38, The Geology of Mount Desert Island, by Gilman and others (1988).
RSVP to mmixon@acadiaenvironmental.com with RSVP-GSM as the subject. Saturday’s trip is via chartered school bus with room for 30. Lodging will be in the bunkhouse at the Schoodic Education and Research Center (arrival after 5 pm on Friday). There will be a small charge per night ($15) for lodging. Saturday evening meal will be provided by GSM. Other information will be forthcoming by email. Make sure Rob Peale, GSM treasurer has your contact information.
The Weston Observatory of Boston College hosts a series of colloquia regarding regional and world geology. A schedule can be found at their website.
The Mt. Washington Observatory conducts winter educational field trips, some of which are focused on or relate to geology. For details, visit their website.
The New England Section of the Association of Engineering Geologists (AEG) meets monthly (generally the third Thursday of the month) and the lecture portion of the meeting counts for 1 hour of continuing education. For details about the next meeting visit: www.aegne.org.
